Tai Chi & Chi Kung
A mind and body exercise for every age
A Chinese mind and body exercise that teaches relaxation, natural movement and a high level of body awareness. Slow and gentle, it suits all ages and fitness levels.
For the mind
The slow, meditative pace brings your attention to the present. Everyday worries can wait, and many people leave class feeling calmer and clearer. Learning a martial art also builds confidence.
For the body
The forms make you stronger and more supple and get the circulation going. The gentle postures are kind to troubled knees, and working consciously through each movement is especially good for the spine and posture.
How Chris teaches it
These are the principles his students work on from the first class:
- A calm mind leads the movement.
- Movements are natural, relaxed and continuous; the end of one is the start of the next.
- Arms and legs move in circles and curves, at an even pace.
- The waist is the axis: when one part moves, the rest follows.
- Head upright, neck relaxed, spine straight, breathing naturally through the nose.
- Place the foot first, then move your weight onto it.
- Be patient. Tai Chi is easy to start and a lifetime to refine.
Chi Kung and relaxation
Classes also include Chi Kung breathing exercises, relaxation and slow partner stretching. Stretching slowly and gently, after a proper warm-up, is the safest way to become more flexible, and it is built into every session.
Moves you’ll learn
Classes work through the traditional Yang style postures, such as Parting the Wild Horse’s Mane, White Crane Spreads Its Wings, Cloud Hands and Single Whip.
Forms Chris teaches
A form is a set sequence of movements, practised as one continuous flow.
Beijing (Peking) Form
Yang style. The most widely practised Tai Chi form in the world, and where most students begin.
Combined Form
Draws on the five main styles of Tai Chi in one longer sequence.
Sword Form
Weapons. The same principles of balance and flow, carried through the straight sword.
